Boot Linux Mint from flash drive on a netbook

Trying to boot Linux Mint from a flash drive on my EEE netbook, I see the following:

vesamenu.c32: Not a COM32R image
 
boot:

To continue booting, do the following from the “boot:” menu:

1. hit tab
2. type “live”
3. press enter
